Leather, Three Ways

Three different answers to the same question. Ombré Leather is the smoothest of them — cardamom over a soft, slightly smoky leather with moss and patchouli underneath, and it reads clean rather than animalic. African Leather is the ornate one: pink pepper and cardamom on top, a cinnamon-and-rose heart, then leather, oud and amber that keep it warm and a little dusty. Falcon Leather is the raw one, and the reason the set exists — saffron and labdanum over undiluted birch tar, closing on oud and benzoin. Tar is exactly what it smells like at first, and whether that is thrilling or unwearable is the thing you are here to find out.

All three perform, but not in the same way. Ombré Leather sits closest to the skin after the first hour and gives you six to eight hours, which is what makes it the office-safe one. African Leather projects hardest of the three and holds eight hours or more; a couple of sprays is genuinely enough. Falcon Leather is the longest-lasting — birch tar and benzoin do not go quietly, and it is still legible on a shirt collar the next morning. Skin chemistry moves all of these by an hour or two in either direction.

Leather is a cold-weather accord and these three are no exception. Ombré Leather is the daytime and workplace option and works from autumn through spring. African Leather wants an evening, and rewards a jacket and a dinner rather than a desk. Falcon Leather is a winter fragrance and a deliberate one — it is not a scent to wear in a lift, a meeting room or anywhere warm and enclosed, and it is best on days you have chosen it on purpose.

Two of the three are marketed unisex and the third, Ombré Leather, is filed as masculine, but leather is one of the accords where marketing tracks reality least. African Leather and Falcon Leather both sell heavily to women — the rose in one and the saffron in the other are traditionally feminine materials doing the softening. If you like leather, the set works; if you do not, no amount of gendering will change that.

Yes. Every vial in the box is hand-poured from an authentic bottle we bought and opened ourselves, and each of the three carries the batch code printed on the bottle it came from, so you can check it yourself. Nothing is diluted, rebottled from a third party, or filled ahead of time — we pour to order.

A decant is a measured portion of a real fragrance transferred into a travel atomiser. It is the same juice from the same bottle, just less of it. For leather it matters more than for most accords, because the category has the widest spread between "I love this" and "I cannot wear this" of anything in perfumery, and a full bottle of any of these three costs well over a hundred euros. Three decants cost a fraction of one bottle and answer the question in a fortnight.
