Montale batch codes, explained
Montale bottles are aluminium rather than glass, which changes what a batch code can even tell you. The metal protects the contents from light far better than clear glass does, so a Montale bottle several years old has usually been shielded from the main cause of degradation regardless of what its code says.

What the characters mean
A letter followed by four digits, sometimes with a trailing letter. The leading letter behaves like a year, but which year each letter means is not published.
Why we stop there: The leading letter does look like a year. We tried to pin it the way we pinned the L'Oréal houses — a bottle cannot be filled before its fragrance launched, and cannot be filled after we put it on sale. For Montale those two limits still leave eight possible readings, spread across four years. Eight candidate years is not a date, so you get the format and not a guess.

Does the aluminium bottle really protect the fragrance?
It genuinely helps. Light is one of the two main things that degrade a fragrance, and an opaque metal bottle blocks it entirely — an advantage clear glass does not have. Heat still reaches the liquid, so storage temperature remains worth caring about.
I cannot find any code on my Montale bottle — is it fake?
Not necessarily. Printing directly onto anodised aluminium wears badly, and codes on these bottles rub away with ordinary handling more readily than etched glass would. Check the box before drawing conclusions from a bare bottle.
Why do Montale codes look so different from niche houses in the same price bracket?
Because there is no shared convention to look different from. Coding is an internal manufacturing decision, and independent houses each solve it their own way. Similarity between two brands usually means a shared filler or parent group, not an industry standard.
