Fireside Trio – Tobacco and Amber Discovery Set

Some fragrances only make sense once the heating is on. This trio collects three of them — Maison Margiela's Jazz Club, Serge Lutens' Ambre Sultan and Mancera's Red Tobacco — in order of volume, from a quiet bar to a full fireplace.

Jazz Club is the easy one: pink pepper, lemon and neroli, then rum, clary sage and vetiver over tobacco leaf, vanilla and styrax. Ambre Sultan is a resin-and-herb amber — coriander, oregano, bay leaf and myrtle over cistus, angelica and patchouli, drying down to amber, benzoin, vanilla and sandalwood. Red Tobacco is the loudest: cinnamon, saffron, nutmeg, incense and oud with a flash of apple and pear, then patchouli and jasmine over tobacco, vanilla, amber and woods.

What does the Fireside Trio smell like?

Three warm fragrances at three volumes. Maison Margiela Jazz Club (Eau de Toilette, 2013) is boozy and smooth — rum and tobacco leaf softened by vanilla, with a light citrus start. Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan (Eau de Parfum, 1993) is herbal and resinous, a dry amber built on oregano, bay leaf and labdanum-rich cistus rather than sugar. Mancera Red Tobacco (Eau de Parfum, 2017) is spiced and dense: cinnamon, saffron, incense and oud over sweet tobacco and vanilla.

How long do they last, and how strong is the projection?

They climb in strength in the order they sit in the box. Jazz Club is an Eau de Toilette and stays fairly close, which makes it the office-friendly one. Ambre Sultan is an Eau de Parfum with a long, resinous dry-down that clings to wool. Red Tobacco projects hardest and lasts longest; one or two sprays is enough indoors. Skin chemistry moves all three.

When and where should I wear them?

Cold weather, mostly. Jazz Club works from autumn through spring and suits a day at work or a relaxed evening. Ambre Sultan is a winter scarf of a fragrance, at its best outdoors in the cold. Red Tobacco is for evenings, dinners and nights out, and is too much for a warm, enclosed room.

Is this set for men or women?

Jazz Club and Ambre Sultan are marketed to men and Red Tobacco to everyone, but amber, rum and tobacco have no gender of their own and all three are widely worn by women. If you like warm, smoky fragrances, the set is for you.

Are Fragnatium's Fireside Trio decants authentic?

Yes. Each of the three vials is hand-poured from an authentic bottle we bought and opened ourselves, and each carries the batch code printed on the bottle it came from, so you can check it yourself. Nothing is diluted or filled ahead of time — we pour to order.

What is a fragrance decant, and why should I try one?

A decant is a measured portion of a real fragrance, transferred into a travel atomiser: the same juice from the same bottle, just less of it. Warm fragrances are the ones that change most over a day — the first spray of Red Tobacco and its last hour are very different scents — so a full wear is the only fair test. Three decants give you that for a fraction of a bottle.
