Guerlain's Shalimar L'Essence opens with bergamot, almond and a thread of incense. The bergamot nods to the 1925 original, while the almond softens it from the first spray.
Iris, rose and opoponax form the heart, with amber and ethylvanillin, the synthetic vanilla Jacques Guerlain built the original around. Delphine Jelk composed it in 2025 for Shalimar's centenary as an Eau de Parfum Intense, in the classic fan-shaped bottle with the name written large across the glass.
Madagascar vanilla, tonka bean, benzoin, musk and a touch of leather make up the base: powdery, resinous and warm. Fragrantica voters put winter and autumn far ahead of spring and summer, and night just ahead of day, so it is at its best on cold evenings, at dinners and on special occasions.
